Figurative to abstract

The creation process of my earlier figurative works followed a ritualized sequence.

Liquid yellow conquered the canvas in impulsive gestures. Occasionally vermilion followed. Then there was a calm of contemplation.

I looked for the beginnings of figurative motifs in the resulting forms.

If I found any, I worked them out with more colors.

This process can be seen in the unfinished painting from 1995.

The figurative ideas here are set off with charcoal.

I subjected the color to the form finding.

So strongly that I forced it into a striking application.

My clearest example is the “Bull” from 1989.

I was slow to open up to the emotional vibration of the paint.

Motifs wanted to be painted out of me in order to free me, to heal me.

By 2023, I had reached a level of recovery and acceptance of my being that allowed me to lovingly turn to color.

The ritual has transformed for the abstract paintings.

I start with water on the canvas.

Through the gun, a color is applied that I feel like.

My hand brings the next color into the action.

Weapon and hand play alternately with the colors.

I am free.

The binding framework of the figurative is dissolved.

The color meets me abstractly on the canvas and I play.

I am interested in an appreciative dialog between the colors.
